Nice mayor targets IRONMAN in budget cuts

The seafront at Nice, host city of the race

Nice’s new mayor, Eric Ciotti, dropped a Friday news item that put the whole of triathlon on its feet. A plan to cut 60 million EUR in the first year of his term would remove, among other things, the city’s IRONMAN events, with the saving put at 1.6 million EUR. IRONMAN issued a statement immediately: the 2026 calendar stands.

What the mayor said

Ciotti presented his savings programme alongside deputy mayor for finance Olivier Breuilly. One item was a cut to spending on sporting events that, in the city’s words, sometimes competed with each other. The city puts that saving at 2.65 million EUR a year. In a social media post the mayor referred directly to the IRONMAN events, pointing to their effect on traffic, on local trade and on access to the city centre over race weekends.

For Nice this is not a trivial sum. The city has hosted IRONMAN France Nice without a break since 2005, and in recent seasons it has also staged the full-distance world championship and is due to host the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, which the current calendar places on 12 and 13 September 2026.

IRONMAN says the calendar stands

The organiser’s response was immediate. In an official statement IRONMAN confirmed that, working with the city of Nice, IRONMAN France Nice, IRONMAN 70.3 Nice and the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship will all take place on the dates already announced. The company added that it is still in talks with the newly elected mayor and is looking forward to welcoming athletes this summer.

So there is a straightforward contradiction: the official budget statement says cuts, the race organiser says the races are on. For the 2,800 professionals and age-groupers registered to race for the 70.3 world title that is an uncomfortable position, particularly since flights and hotels for Nice are booked half a year ahead.

Why it matters beyond one city

Nice is more than one venue on the schedule. It is the template for how a city and a race work together: a swim start straight off the beach on the Promenade des Anglais, a mountainous bike profile above the Cote d’Azur, direct access from an international airport and global name recognition. That is exactly why IRONMAN trusts the city with world championships.

If the authorities really do start withdrawing support, triathlon has a structural problem. Road access, policing costs, tourist revenue, public funding and residents’ tolerance all decide whether the biggest races stay on the map. Once the first major city walks away, others may start doing the same arithmetic.

What happens next

In the short term, registered athletes have a green light. The courses, the dates of 12 and 13 September and the organisation stand, according to IRONMAN’s own statement. In the medium term, the thing to watch is how negotiations between the town hall and the organiser end. If Ciotti holds his course and IRONMAN finds a cost compromise with the city, the championship goes ahead, but anything after 2026 is an open question.

For anyone with a start in Nice booked, hotel and flight reservations are best left alone for now. If a race is cancelled, IRONMAN usually offers a slot transfer or a refund of the entry fee.
